American Chamber
of Commerce in Uzbekistan

MONTHLY_MEETING

Monthly Meeting on April 14, 2011

The April monthly business meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan featured guest speaker Dr. Hillel Newman, the Israeli ambassador to the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Newman’s presentation, “Scientific Innovations and Modern Technology in the Service of Trade and Economy – Israel and Uzbekistan,” evoked great interest among meeting participants. Overall there were more than 50 people at the presentation.

Don Nicholson II, president of AmCham, opened the evening and invited Newman to take the floor.

The presentation featured three parts: general information about Israel, Israeli companies doing business in Uzbekistan, and economic innovation used in Israel to develop that country.

As an example of the rapid scientific progress being experienced in Israel, Newman showed three short videos. One featured a breakthrough in solar energy technology in Israel, a second video featured Israel’s anti-missile system, and the third video showed how fish can be grown in any part of the world.

In the last video it was shown how the authors of a marine project used the synergy of the biological, technological and aqua cultural cooperation to grow marine fish anywhere using minimum resource consumption and water recycling.

Israel contributes to the development of Uzbekistan through social development works in the spheres of agriculture, health and education, Newman said. Today more than 20 Israeli companies work in Uzbekistan.

Along with a unique and friendly presentation, meeting participants received an advertising gift on behalf of the Embassy of Israel in Uzbekistan.

The monthly AmCham meeting was held in the Club Lounge Room of the InterContinental Hotel. After the presentation, the evening continued informally in the bar.

AmCham Monthly Meeting on March 24, 2011

The American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan (AmCham) held its March monthly meeting on Thursday, March 24, at the Dome Restaurant of the Hotel InterContinental.

The guest presenter for the evening was a team of professionals from the Uzbek Commodity Exchange (UZEX). Several AmCham members had previously requested this presentation from UZEX.

The main speaker, PulatTillaboev, head of the information and analysis department at UZEX, titled the presentation “The Role of the Uzbek Commodity Exchange in the Uzbek Economy.”

The evening began as Tatyana Bystrushkina, executive director of AmCham, welcomed the 70-plus guests and invited Tillaboev to give his presentation. Before speaking, he showed a short five-minute video on the activity of UZEX.

The exchange was established in 1994 by presidential decree, replacing the old commodity trade mechanism, Tillaboev explained. Today UZEX has more than 2,500 brokerage companies, 100,000 clients and several trading offices abroad. The turnover today amounts to 3.47 trillion soum which is almost eight times what it was in 2004, he said.

UZEX trades more than 200 commodity groups in total, most of which are construction materials, foodstuff, nonferrous and ferrous metals, polythene, and many others. The main exported items are polythene, cotton, cement and oil products.

Currently there are five UZEX projects in Uzbekistan, Tillaboev said. They are UZBEX, the 1-Pay System, a logistic center in Angren, the Kokand Trade Center, and a state procurement system.  All of these projects are convenient tools for trading and participating in governmental tenders, he added.

As he closed his presentation, Tillaboev called on participants to use UZEX in their activities.

Overall, the presentation was well received and prompted a lot of discussion formally and informally as guests gathered in the bar to socialize at the end of the evening.
