TASHKENT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL RAISES LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS

Tashkent International School Raises Local & International Awareness

Donations to Charity

TIS students and parents donated more than 900 cans of peas and corn to the Republican Society of Invalids of Uzbekistan and the Blind Society of the Sergeli District of Tashkent in October. The cans were given to the school by students and parents with additional donations coming from the Korzinka supermarket chain and the Dedeman Hotel.

The school collected the cans for the 8th grade math students who used them to create a CANstruction project on Sept. 29. The sculpture was part of the 8th grade math unit in which the students created a sculpture design and then used their math skills to build the design. The winning idea was the Empire State Building in New York.

The elementary student council at TIS is also looking at other ways it can continue to reach out into the community. Last school year the students collected more than 200 pairs of indoor slippers for children at an orphanage outside Tashkent. They hope to continue this partnership as they seek new ways to help the children.
Celebrating the United Nations
Students, parents and members of the international community celebrated the diverse flavors and traditions of the world at the school’s annual UN Day on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The theme of the day was “Engage in our World” and included interactive and informative displays from more than 18 diplomatic embassies/missions and various UN organizations, including UNICEF.UN Day also featured the TIS fall bazaar, an international cuisine food court, various musical performances, dances and sporting demonstrations, as well as the fall book fair.

TIS is dedicated to participating in events such as UN Day which raise awareness of the diversity of the world around us and the dignity of every human life, according to Robert Brindley, director at TIS.

“As a community, we are committed to a profound respect for each other and our differences; UN Day on Oct. 29 was one way in which we, as a community marked this commitment,” Brindley said. “If you were able to join us, we hope you enjoyed the day. I certainly did!”
