“World Bank Group’s partnership with the public and private sectors in Uzbekistan”

On 28 October 2020, the American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan (AmCham) organized a webinar called “World Bank Group’s partnership with the public and private sectors in Uzbekistan”.
Hugo Minderhoud, President of AmCham Uzbekistan was moderating the event. Three guests-speakers were invited: Marco Mantovanelli, Country Manager of World Bank, Zafar Khashimov, IFC Country Officer for Uzbekistan and Vinayak Nagaraj, World Bank Senior Country Economist for Uzbekistan.
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Following Uzbekistan’s ambitious reform agenda, the WB investment to the country increased from $ 1,8 billion to $ 4,5 billion by the end of October 2020. Representative of WB, Marco Mantovanelli shared information about the WB projects and plans. “We rely very much on the consultations with the business association like AmCham Uzbekistan”, continued Marco Mantonavelli, Country Manager, the World Bank Group. The WB new Country Partnership Framework (CPF) 2022-2026 will be developed within 2021 to outline the financial and technical assistance to Uzbekistan.
The second guest- speaker, Sadjida Tashpulatova, IFC Operations’ Officer in IFC Tashkent, shared information about IFC’s 4 main priorities and a plan for the next 4 years were discussed. Four main priorities are:

1. Making market work better, helping the country to transitioning to private sector economy – Agriculture, Financial Sector and Chemical Sector support.

2. Inclusion – Providing better health care services and better access to finance.

3. Connectivity – Improving Uzbekistan integration into global and regional trades.

4. Energy Sustainability – to develop efficient energy utilities in Uzbekistan.

The last speaker was Vinayak Nagaraj, who shared the key areas of concern re-macroeconomic performance, discussed big reforms in labour market and in SEO (state-owned enterprise). The risks from COVID-19 and global crisis were discussed.
At the end of the webinar, there was a Q&A session where guests asked questions to the speakers.
AmCham Uzbekistan Monthly Meetings is a high-level policy dialogue between private sector and government of Uzbekistan, IFI’s and diplomatic corps that enables direct access to high level officials.
